Just a little English humor...now you know why learning grammar is so important! LOL!
TASK: Find an example of an error in grammar, word usage, or spelling in English. It can be something you saw on the Internet, on a sign, in a book, etc. It might be something someone said incorrectly. Indicate where you saw the error. Explain the error. How would you correct it?
Since you cannot post pictures, just write it as a comment.
Example:
"They're shitting on the test." This was a sentence written by one of my students. BTW....nobody from this class. =D The student meant to say "CHEATING".
DATE DUE: February 21, 2013
A common error in word usage may be using the word "write" instead of "right". A person may want to say that something is correct so they should use the word "right" but the other word sound so similar that they might get confused.
ReplyDeleteI actually want you to provide a specific example you saw on a sign or something, not a common error. The Internet is filled with errors....especially on Facebook. People put up signs all over the place....check to see if you find an error on any of them and share with the class.
DeleteI saw this error on the internet: "Clothes; Left In Machines, After Cycle Is Complete; Will Be Removed!!!". The error in this sentence is the wrong placement of the punctuation symbols. It should be written like this: Clothes left in machines, after cycle is complete, will be removed.
ReplyDeleteGood example! You didn't mention wrong use of capitalization also, but you did make the corrections so good job.
DeleteI saw this error on the internet - It was a sign that said: Become a partner in pubic education with the red lion area school district. The error in this sentence is pubic, it should have said public. The correct sentence had to be written like this: Become a partner in public education with the red lion area school district.
ReplyDeleteLOL! I don't think I would like to become a partner with that district!
DeleteI saw this error on the internet. It was a sign that said: Please do not put heavy item on the copy machine, thank you for your copulation. The error on the first sentence was the word "item" According to the sentence, the word should be wrote on plural. The error on the second sentence was the word "copulation" The correct word should be "cooperation" So the correct sentence should be wrote like this: Please do not put heavy items on the copy machine, thank you for your cooperation.
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness!!! That's really funny! Good example.
DeleteOMG!! jajaja!!
DeleteOne of my friends send me this text: "I'm going to sleep know". The error is the word know. It supposed to say: I'm going to sleep now. It's funny how a simple letter can change the meaning of a word.
ReplyDeleteI wonder how he/she spells "know". =D
DeleteI was texting to an old friend of mine last week and he wrote to me: What are you going to it at lounch? The error is it, he meant to say eat. The correct sentence should be (What are you going to eat at lunch?)It was the mother of all LOL!!!!
ReplyDeleteThat was a good example.
DeleteHe wrote it as he hears it in Spanish. One additional correction: Instead of "at lunch", it should be "for lunch".
DeleteSome examples of misspelled words are truely, realy, untill, seperate, alot. The correct way is truly, really, until, separate, a lot.
ReplyDelete"Separate" and "a lot" are frequently misspelled.
DeleteOK, but I was looking more for a specific mistake you saw somewhere specifically like on a sign, a text message, etc.
I saw this error on some people Facebook status; "I'm so BOARD", "Really BOARD in my house", even my sister once said it to me and my aunt told her, -"Increible que seas una tabla". So funny but it suppose to be like this: "I'm so bored", "Really bored at my house". I guess this is why for some people English is so difficult, how words sound all the same but their not.
ReplyDeleteAnother one I have seen is "I'm boring". This one makes me laugh. Eres aburrido??? =D
DeleteI saw this on a picture of The Simpsons, apparently is a picture from an episode. On a shirt it says “Try and stop us” it should be written like this: “Try to stop us”
ReplyDeleteYeah, a lot of people commit this error of using "try and..." I've probably said it too. =D
DeleteI saw this error in a picture apparently of a restaurant: ''We are still eating kids for free...conditions apply''. It was supposed to say ''Kids still eat for free...conditions apply''. I found this error hilarious, I mean, who is going to eat a kid??? o.O
ReplyDeleteSeriously? Where was this so I don't go...LOL! They could also substitute the word "eating" for "feeding". Good example.
Deletean example of a grammar error is: "I go to the store and I bought milk." the error is in the verbs. the correct form is: "I went to the store and I bought milk" or "I go to the store and I buy milk."
ReplyDeleteOK, but I was looking more for a specific error you may have seen on a sign, text message, etc.
DeleteI saw a announcement of a restuarant that it's say "Sorry are credit and gift card machine is dawn at the moment! Sorry + Thank you". The error if this was the words that was not used correctly like dawn the meaning it's different that down. Another thing is that they use are and not the credit and gift card machine or our credit and gift card machine. The sentences need to say ""Sorry our credit and gift card machine it's down at the moment! Thank you".
ReplyDeleteWow! So many errors in one sentence. Your correction was OK except for the "it's". It should be "is" since you already have a subject.
DeleteMy friend sent me this:
ReplyDelete"If I would have known about the party, I would have gone to it." and I realize that he wrote wrong. The correct way to write it would be: "If I had known about the party, I would have gone."
Good example. Not many people would catch this one.
