DID YOU KNOW....?

Today in class we talked about the economy in industrialized and developing countries.  We also made reference to the economy of Puerto Rico.  The sad reality is the image many people have of Puerto Rico is not a very positive one.  We are seen as lazy people being maintained by the the United States.  However, there is the flip side of the coin.  Here is a video to show reality....no politics, just numbers.  What do you think?  (The video is in Spanish.)

TASK:  Watch the video and then write your reaction to the video.  Did you know this information already?  Was there anything that stood out for you?  (Paragraph: 8-10 sentences).

 DATE DUE:  March 28, 2013

  1. First of all, I had no idea of theese numbers. Second, It's unbelievable that we have this lack of knowlege and because of that we lose the right to demand more for us. Also, it is a topic that politicians reserve to themselves and they are guilty that society has non-sense of the economical situation. I don't judge the politicians intirelye, because we as a society dont have the minimum interest over the topic, with the exception of economist. There is rumor that we depend on the United States for economical sustain but by watching the video, I was able to see that such rumors are not entirly true. I believe that the eductation of Puerto Rico being plubic or private must teach students about the economical system so that we can learn how to defend ourselves. In conclusion, I would like it if the economical crisis of our country could change for the better. This could only change if a adviser came to do so.

  2. I have known some of this numbers but not all. I'm impressed about how much money the United State take from us. Too much people talk about the USA and how they mantain us, but they don't know the real true. The numbers in this video says the opposite thing. The USA need us more than we need them. Some facts that surprise me is the high cost of the imported products from the USA. Also the high cost of the cabotage law is something that we need to change to improve our economy. It's not acceptable how much money the USA take from us in just a transportation of products.

  3. I had previous knowledge about the cabotage law and how it affects us economically. What I didn’t know was how much it costs to use the export system of USA. The cabotage law makes us use the most expensive export system in the world and it sucks. We could be saving a lot of money if the cabotage law was terminated. Using other export systems would bring some ease to the debt Puerto Rico has, but that’s not going to happen. Another thing that freaked me out was the winnings that the USA had in 2008. They won 70 billion dollars that year and they only gave us 13 billion dollars from which we had to pay 8 billion dollars. Great business for them, bad deal for us. What I don’t get is how do you win approximately 70 billion dollars annually additionally from what you gain by yourself and be in a debt of more than a trillion dollars. The numbers tell us that Puerto Rico can be sustained by its own people despite the fact that we get some economic helps from the USA.

  4. I never seen a video like this before. The fact that this numbers are real is the proof that i always wanted to find. I always think that Puerto Rico have the economical ways to be more productive than any other islands in the Caribbean. This video shows to me that the real problem behind our defficit, is the United States itself. If the island gave to the states billions and the States gave us the half of that or less. I believe that Puerto Rico have more than necessary for be sustainable. This video change my way of thinking about this statement, because i always believe that the United States maintain us with economical helps. But now that i saw this, the reality is other. The americans need us for import and export. They need us more than us because this island is very useful for their purposes and generates a good quantity of their products and profits, without expensive costs and restrictable laws.

  5. I had a little knowledge about it but not much. It is impressive to see the video and realize how things really are. I always thought that Puerto Rico is a very self-sufficient and that we are the best deal for the United States. If we come to see United States depends more on us than we are of them economically. The economic problems we face today as a nation have been caused by the United States to a long term. It is very sad to see ourselves speak ill of our country without knowing the truth. The blame for that lies with the government and we do not speak out about it. I think in all the universities should add a general economics course in the general curriculum for people to learn about it, that might help them personally as well. For lack of knowledge is that others speak.

  6. WOW! I knew a little about this situation and the numbers, but now I really know the truth. It is unbelievable how much money US gets out of PR, and how little it gives to us. Many people say we are very dependable of the money that US gives us, but in reality we do not get nothing in comparison on what we give them. We are the ones that generate money to the US, not US to PR. I like the phrase that the guy said “we are one of the best costumers US has”. Now I have no doubt about this. One thing that stood out for me was the earnings that the US gets out of PR; out of the superstores, drugstores, etc, that is 34 billion dollars. That kind of money is ridiculous. In conclusion, we provide more than what we receive.

  7. Wow, this numbers impressed me a lot, I personally had no idea. I can’t believe how people judge us by saying those bad things even when they are the people that are actually stealing from us. How can we give so much money and receive less. How we can buy everything from the U.S. then sell and use less of our own products. I think this is our bad, because we and by we I mean this small island should not take less than we deserve or give. We need to learn to use our own products and stop buying from other countries this way people will treat and talk about us with respect. People should see this list and think of it when they say that the U.S is better than us or give us everything. The government should do something about this because we deserve more.

  8. I'm completely in shock right know. This is the first time i see this numbers. I think is over rated to say that Puerto Rico is being mantained by the U.S.. Based on those numbers we can say that that Puerto Rico doesn't even recieve one fourth of the money compared to what they get from us. Those numbers are prove that we are the number one costumer of United State. I think the cabotage law is one of the things that are affecting us the most. Based on this numbers i think is ok to say that the U.S. needs us more than they think and is not ok to say that we are being mantained. They should say thank you for what we are giving them.

  10. I knew about this information and the thing that really makes me mad is how people say that we don't have any worth and the little that we have is because of the USA. The reason why people say that Puerto Ricans depend on the USA is because of their lack of information. Story tells us about the ups and downs of our people but it always shows us how Puerto Rico prevails through it all. People say we receive a lot from the USA, but in reality we are just giving the triple of what we receive. Because of people ignorance we haven't been able to open our eyes and realize that we are able to stand for ourselves. It is fear of what we've never have, that is, complete freedom of our actions and decisions. The reality is that we need courage at the same time as fear. Fear does not label us as weak people but as strong people fighting for a reason. So we need to stop being ignorant, realize that it is us who decide our worth, not the USA, and that in the end we leave this place without our belongings but with our soul and pride.

  11. While watching this video, all I could've think of was about a term called media depictions. Media Depictions is basically information that is manipulated by the media, considering how bias is our press system. I was quite aware that we are the perfect business to the US. In one year only they make a revenue of 1700% of what they inicially gives us. The mentally of "el mantengo" goes back to the colonization period in 1493, we have always been subordinated by another country, ergo the distortion of the self-image. I must say that the image of "el mantengo" is not only part of PR, in the States they see us as a burden, and I blame the media, because they do not inform, they impose what they think you should now, and that's not journalism. We have to start thinking with our heads and see the reality. We are capable of much more, we have to just wake up of this distorted perception.

  12. No I did not know that information but now I know. More or less what I thought because I studied accounting in high school. It's pretty much like a bank loan while you do come up paying more than usual for the money you've requested. I think that law should not exist because it is hurting us in the economy. It's true what they say that many people talk about us not knowing that we pay back to the United States and we are paying more than normal. It's like the example I just mentioned the bank paid more for a loan that is supposedly for the good of us and to improve. What stood out the most is that in fact almost all the shops and things are in the U.S. and we pay to have those stores here. Actually we can do more things such as coffee was said in the video because we are one of the few countries that has coffee but no longer do so for lost profit.

  13. All my life I thought that we were very dependable in every sense from US. Now I definitely think that Puerto Rico is not a dependable island. I didn’t know this valuable information .Puerto Rico is definitely producing more money to the US, more than they give us. Four billion dollars is a small portion in comparison with what they earn from us. The most shocking part for me was the law of ”cabotaje” , because I think it is not fair that we have to pay for the most expensive transportation in the world. US should increase our benefits and bring more money and help to the economy of PR. I definitely think that this video should be shared with all puertoricans and all US citizens, so all of them know the reality of the situation.

  14. I had no idea of these numbers. All my life I thought that the United States maintain us. Its unbelievable how these numbers open our eyes to see the reality. I think all the Puerto Ricans should watch these video to see the real situation and do something about it. That cabotage law is unacceptable. They are taking all the money we produce in exchange for much less than half of it in ''financial aid''. We are the ones that maintain them. If all the Puerto Ricans knew this, the situation would be very different...

  15. I'm very impress with this video. Since I didn't had no clue about these numbers. I have always thought that we where sustain and maintain by the United States, but know I can see that they need us, since we are so much productive for them. This video makes me very mad, because there are a lot of people that doesn't have the correct knowledge to talk about this things and they give ignorant opinions without knowing the real side of the coin. This is a shocking video that should be shown in school, university and even in work. So adolescent and adult could have a different perspective of Puerto Rico economy.

  16. I never imagine that something like this could happend. It's amazing how like they explained to us by another point of view and made us realized that United States depend on us not Puerto Rico of them. In Puerto Rico people never bother to search for this facts and discuss them. We give more that what we receive and i think that we need to stop saying that without the U.S. goverment we are nothing. We are U.S. costumers and we give them the triple percentage of money that they give to us and that is not fair. I'm going to start looking for this kind of information to be more orientated and know what i'm talking about.

Sorry for sending it later than 28 of march i was out on a cruise and i didn't have internet, thanks.

  17. I believe i said it in class PR income its not that bad but whats alarming is the current Cabotage laws that implied in our economy, Puerto Ricos PIB (producto interno bruto) is currently $26,588(2011) per capita which is also alarming considering all the bill's which have to be paid from our pocket its very difficult to live with $26,000 now a day's more alarming is that professional's salaries that people with bachelor's degree are included in this quote. its not surprising to me that we are 4th largest market that the us has. for me this is a wake up call for all of us it should not take us by surprise, funny some north Americans say this phrase "noting comes for free".

P.S. I don't have internet at my house sory for being late on this blog.

  18. The video shows us to be oriented and look for information before you speak about some subject that you really don’t know or sometimes don’t have complete information. The money we received as federal funds like are Pell Grants, Medicare, retirement funds, whatever your point of view was that Puerto Rico provides 4,627,000,000 as to what is going to U.S. 71,630,000,000 and some say that we are held according to that table are data from the 2007-08 government bank. I did not know if it was true but the data are consistent start think when people say that we are kept if we give more than we receive. I wanted to mention that the state of Mississippi has a higher status beside of Puerto Rico and is much huge compared to our little island.
